All About Mr. Michael Bregy, Superintendent of Schools
The following was written about Mr. Bregy for the Kane County Administrator of the Year Nomination.
Contributions to Local Community:
Working as a superintendent in a district that has been financially strapped, Michael developed creative, reality-based budgeting – “doing more with less.” He helped the entire District develop financial plans that address budget reductions without jeopardizing target resources that enhance student achievement and opportunities. With an explosive growth in student enrollment, the 3 high schools were at the point that there were too many students and not enough room for desks. Michael Bregy was the chairperson who studied district school enrollment, changing school attendance boundaries and creating the possible scenarios of scheduling school days in split shifts and adding mobile classrooms. He was also the leader of the community steering committee for our past March, 2006 school referendum where we asked our residents to support two tax increases to build a new high school and three elementary schools, new teachers and renovations to 20 other schools in our district. Michael was actively involved in having several large groups of staff (100+) and students (200+) become mobilized to educate our parent population and our community of our state of crisis. Students began to meet during lunch time to educate themselves and then met on Saturday mornings to begin canvassing the neighborhoods in our District.
Michael Bregy Believes Shared Values = Shared Success
Michael Bregy enjoys the challenge of solving and explaining complex problems in understandable terms. He loves being a visible part of the internal school community as well as the larger community as a resident of Algonquin. He relishes in being a flexible, “out of the box” thinker who can make independent decisions but is a team player able to see the big picture yet able to listen empathetically to all constituents. He constantly challenges his own thinking and increases his knowledge with research-based, up-to-date strategies for high school curriculum. Michael Bregy does not consider himself the Principal but he does consider himself to be the “head teacher” at Jacobs High School and has always considered himself as a teacher. In his own words, Michael Bregy enthusiastically explained, “I have surrounded myself with the most talented people involved in education. Operating on a shared leadership model, I try to bring out the strengths of others, while working with an active student, staff and parent population which I believe are essential characteristics that are unique to the Jacobs High School principalship."
More About Michael T. Bregy:
Michael Bregy has been a public person for most of his life, with plenty of opportunities to speak about his accomplishments; both personal and academic. But for many different reasons, he hasn’t done that. The more he grew in public stature over the course of his life and educational career, the less he felt he should say about himself. This biography reveals, for the first time, an opportunity for Michael T. Bregy to bring attention to himself. For years, people have described Michael as extremely outgoing but he also has a reputation of never speaking of his life accomplishments, although there has always been plenty to speak about from his teaching experiences at the elementary, middle and high school levels and his leadership administratively. What has been known about Michael, the basic facts, can fit in a paragraph: He was born in 1966 in Mt. Prospect, IL. to Robert and Joyce Bregy. Michael was the second born between two sisters Donna and Karen. His parents still reside in the same house in which he was raised. Michael always loved school and his favorite seat was the student desk closest to the teacher. He attended Fairview Elementary School, Lincoln Jr. High School and Prospect High School in Mt. Prospect IL. Michael can easily name every single teacher he ever had!
